Djamali specializes in pancreas transplants. Dr. Arjang Djamali completed his baccalaureate degree at the Lycée d’Etat Carnot in Cannes, France, in 1987, majoring in mathematics and physics. He obtained his Masters Degree in Immunology in 1994 and his Medical Degree in 1996, both from the Faculté de Médecine de Montpellier. However, according to Arjang Djamali, MD, professor at the UW School of Medicine and Pubic Health and UW Health nephrologist, race is a social construct rather than a biological one, and should not be used as a proxy for muscle mass or kidney function. Djamali says that using race as a factor can potentially misrepresent the level of care that the person needs. “Essentially, this calculation would often suggest that a Black patient’s kidney function is better than what it really is. These are the reasons race needs to be eliminated from the formula,” Djamali said.
